Visit 2002

April 2002 saw the 5th anniversary of the twinning. A group of just over 20 members and friends from St. Andrews made their way to Neustadt. Some flew and the rest drove, arriving on Thursday 5th April. The festivities began at 8am on the Friday morning, when we left the Pauluskirche by coach for Mainz. First visit - St. Stephan’s Church.

The most striking feature of the church was the colour blue, the windows were wonderful.
Next stop - a pub with its own brewery! We were treated to a history of the establishment by the master brewer, a superb meal and the obligatory time set aside for sampling the beer. When asked if it was possible to export to Lincoln we were told that no beer leaves the premises - it is all consumed on site.

Next stop - the ZDF television studios. A two hour guided tour and a trade secret or two!

To round off an already perfect day we were able to spend time in the city of Mainz looking at the cathedral and other places of interest.

A donated pillar, some think should have been put into the cathedral, others are not sure. Anyway, it is on show and certainly a talking point.

The next day started a bit later with a reception at the “Rathaus” the Hambach town hall. We enjoyed a glass of wine, the mayor spoke, we enjoyed wine and pretzels... The wine princesses were also present. The mayor spoke about wine being good for you…
Those who drink, sleep: Those who sleep do not sin: Those who do not sin go to heaven: Therefore those who drink wine go to heaven!

Sunday was spent at church celebrating the 5th anniversary of the twinning. It began with a church service, followed by lunch and entertainment.
A wonderful time was had by all, many new friendships were made and we all looked forward to meeting again soon.

Sunday, however, did not end there…

An evening walk around old Neustadt had been arranged. We met our guide and were introduced to much of the history of the area. It included the fountain in the town centre with its intricate brass animals, including the one above:-

At the end of the walk a surprise had been laid on - cheers!
